Ironically, these are the same cabinets that residential painters like us are constantly asked to paint, because in most cases stained wood has a strong, warm (almost orange) tone that is very unattractive. But home builders often have tight budgets and cheaper colored cabinets are less attractive.

Hence the revival of the all-white kitchen! You might think it’s just a trend, but painting kitchen cabinets white is a timeless look that will never go out of style. Whether traditional or contemporary, a white kitchen almost always works in a century-old farmhouse or a modern high-rise apartment.
But not everyone wants an all white kitchen. And the pendulum is always swinging back and forth in interior design. White is here to stay, but we’re also coming back to colour, pattern and the fun of maximalism. If you like strong color, your kitchen cabinets might be painted a rich blue, a soft green, or even black.
You can keep the classic white elegance on your upper cabinets and possibly your backsplash, but add some color and personality to your lower cabinets and kitchen island. If you’re worried that a white kitchen will look sterile, but an entire kitchen in a strong color is just a dream, you can literally split the difference by choosing and painting a neutral white or light white for your cupboards highest. There are many ways to liven up a dull kitchen. You can swap your builder grade lighting fixtures for some statement pendant lights. You can install raised cabinet door hardware and drawer pulls. If you don’t mind the mess of demolition, you can rip out the tired backsplash and install a striking patterned tile or luxurious stone. (Don’t choose something too trendy … choose something that will stand the test of time. Replacing backsplash tile is a pain.) And don’t forget new countertops! But for a powerful impact, there’s nothing like painting your cupboards, the largest visible surface in your kitchen.
The good thing is that you can only paint half of your cabinets. If your tops are already white or a light neutral, paint your bottoms a contrasting color. Or, if your lower cabinets are stained wood that you really like, paint your upper cabinets white.

You can’t get away with this if the entire kitchen is unattractive, but unless you like a completely neutral kitchen and won’t be replacing the counters or backsplash anytime soon, consider introducing a second color. on your cupboards.

3. Painting the lower part of your kitchen a dark color and the upper half a light color can reduce the visual weight of the upper cabinets.
If your kitchen is smaller or has large upper cabinets, these can be very visible and “in your face.” If you need to keep the tops for storage and don’t want to try open shelving, paint your tops a light color and your lower cabinets a dark color. Of course, you could paint the whole kitchen white, but painting the upper cabinets a light color and a dark color on the lower cabinets gives more visual “weight” to the lower half of the kitchen. Your upper half will be less dominant.
